Holsters are a Must
The purpose of a holster is to secure your firearm safely while providing you access to it when you need it. It should fit your specific gun, cover the trigger, and provide enough retention so that your gun doesn’t fall out during normal activity or in a physical scuffle.
There are a wide variety of holster carry methods, both on- and off-body. Let’s discuss off-body carry first.
Off-body carry simply means your gun will be held in a holster that is not attached to your body or clothing. These can be purses, briefcases, or other totes enhanced with integral holster compartments. There are also backpacks and day planner-type cases that have holsters built into them, and I’ve even seen models that attach to the sideboards of your bed for quick access when you’re facing an attack in your own home. (Note that such holsters are never to be an option when children or any other unauthorized and unknowing person is in your home.)
Though off-body holsters provide options, there are also some drawbacks. As you might imagine, they’re more vulnerable to theft, as in a purse snatching, and you must be extra vigilant to keep it under your control at all times. Leaving your day planner/holster in the conference room would rank high on the irresponsibility list, and you can’t leave a holster backpack hanging on a knob in the café where every other person hangs their backpack. With the purse holsters, you can’t hang one on a chair in a restaurant, set it down where it can easily be grabbed by others, and you can’t leave it in a shopping cart as you wander up and down the grocery store aisle. I’ll say it again: It needs to be under your personal and full control and supervision at all times. This is for your safety and the safety of those around you.
